*frowns loudly*

This is what you come to understand.
That the prisons do not define you. That the journey is not a measure of suffering. That even when there are chains yet felt and scars yet seen, the pain of a man and his loneliness are worth neither more nor less than number of times he has laughed.
This is what you come to believe. That there are shades to a crooked mouth beyond the bitter twist of irony.
That clumsy jokes and poor wine make for trustworthy companions.
And, at times, bedfellows.
That a chuckle is grown. It need be cultivated only by time and possibility—and friendship, which acts with every contradiction of the weather, to offer rain and sunlight. Both are needed. And it will bloom, a sturdy and homely little thing, like a mushroom in a dirty carpet.
That these gardens appear between cobblestones, vines along stone walls, roots that wind through the hard earth, pale shoots and stems nourished in Darktown itself.
That if a smile arrives, it does so on the heels of a frown or a cough. That if a shadow remains, it exists only by way of finding the light.
This is what you come to.
That you crave a foolish companion making foolish jokes at a foolish hour of the night. That friendship is an ugly creature. That you will wince and roll your eyes during and after you sit beside it for any length of time. That you will groan—and it will mean happiness.
Soon, you will be sharing their terrible senses of humor. And the rain falls. And the sunlight. And the flowers grow to scatter their seeds. They return after the hoarfrost melts. They bid farewell to winter.

“Blessed are those who stand before the corrupt and the wicked and do not falter!” Everyone’s favorite despot, Knight Commander Meredith. I have such a fascination with her character, particularly after siding with her during the opening of Act 3. Her family’s story, and the way she still seemed so damn fond of her sister, added so much more depth to her one woman crusade. She allows brief windows into her psyche, sometimes appearing genuinely remorseful for the measures she takes. Even Anders acknowledges that she honestly believes she is doing good despite the atrocities committed under her command.I based this off of my favorite loading screen in the game. <3This was wallowing untouched in my WIP folder for about three months before I finally decided to finish it yesterday. I blame the acute psychosis I suffered from painting soulessly complicated armor. :|

Meredith’s a great character. She makes me wonder what she must have been like at different points in her life. Before she became a templar, before the lyrium idol… did she ever smile? Was she always super-serious and carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, since the day her sister died?
She was always a cautionary tale for my first lady Hawke, who’s also the strong, solitary warrior type. The more losses she suffered in life, the more responsibility she took on, and the more self-reliant she’d insist on being. Running around trying to solve everyone’s problems for them and unable to accept help in return. That’s a direct route to self-destruction, even without a lyrium idol.
